Best Wood for Furniture in Jaipur's Climate — A Manufacturer's Guide

Extreme summers, dry winters, and dust — Jaipur's climate punishes the wrong wood choice. Here's what a 30-year furniture manufacturer recommends.

How Jaipur's Climate Affects Wood

Jaipur sits in a semi-arid zone: 45°C summers, cold and dry winters (down to 5°C in January), low humidity for most of the year except the monsoon months. This cycle of heat, cold, and dryness causes wood to expand and contract repeatedly. Poorly chosen or poorly treated wood develops cracks, warps, and joint failures within 2–3 years.

The Wood Options Compared

Solid Teak

Best for: Outdoor furniture, doors, frames where decades of durability matter
Jaipur performance: Excellent. Natural oils make it highly resistant to heat and dryness
Cost: ₹1,200 to ₹2,000 per cubic foot for grade A Burma teak
Limitation: For full interior furniture sets, teak costs become very high. Used selectively at Furnshin — for structural frames and show pieces.

Sheesham (Indian Rosewood)

Best for: Dining tables, chairs, bedroom furniture
Jaipur performance: Very good. Dense grain, handles temperature changes well
Cost: ₹600 to ₹900 per cubic foot
Limitation: Inconsistent grain can cause visual variation in painted finishes. Better for oil/wax or natural finishes.

MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard)

Best for: Painted furniture, modular cabinets, TV units with glossy finishes
Jaipur performance: Only adequate if moisture-resistant grade (MR-MDF) is used. Swells and crumbles in contact with moisture.
Cost: ₹60 to ₹80 per sq ft (18mm)
Limitation: Not suitable in Jaipur for kitchens or bathrooms. Heavy. Poor screw-holding near edges.

Marine Plywood (BWR/BWP Grade)

Best for: Kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, all interior modular furniture
Jaipur performance: Excellent. Boiling Water Resistant grade handles humidity and temperature cycles without delaminating
Cost: ₹110 to ₹160 per sq ft (19mm)
Our recommendation: This is what Furnshin uses as standard for all cabinet carcasses. The price premium over particle board pays back in durability within 3 years.

Particle Board / Chip Board

Best for: Budget furniture in controlled indoor environments
Jaipur performance: Poor. Swells at edges, brittle, low screw-holding strength
Cost: ₹40 to ₹60 per sq ft
Avoid for: Anything in kitchens, bathrooms, or anywhere subject to temperature variation
