The gate is the first impression of any Jaipur home
In residential areas across Jaipur — Vaishali Nagar, Mansarovar, Civil Lines, Sanganer, Pratap Nagar — the gate and compound wall are often the first (and sometimes only) visible element of a home from the street. A gate that is well-proportioned, correctly finished, and functions without rattling or binding communicates more about a property than almost any interior element.
Here is a practical guide to commissioning a custom iron gate in Jaipur.
Material options
MS (Mild Steel) flat bar and square section — the standard and most appropriate material for Jaipur's climate. Strong, weldable, and available in the sections needed for virtually any gate design. When powder-coated, it will last 10–15 years before the finish needs attention.
SS 304 (Stainless Steel) — more expensive, more corrosion-resistant, self-finishing (no paint needed). Used for contemporary minimal gate designs where a brushed metal look is desired. Not common in traditional Jaipur gate styles but appropriate for modern villas and commercial entrances.
Cast iron inserts — not structural (cast iron is brittle), but decorative finials, scroll tops, and post caps are available in cast iron and add visual weight to traditional gate designs.
Design styles seen in Jaipur
Flat bar grid — parallel flat bar members, horizontal or vertical, with minimal decoration. Clean, modern, allows visibility through the gate. Suits contemporary house designs. Fabrication is fast and cost is lower than traditional designs.
Traditional scroll work — MS square section with curved scroll elements hand-bent and welded. Jaipur's traditional bungalow gates. Requires skilled fabrication time. No power-formed scrolls — each has to be bent individually.
Panel + frame — a solid perforated or mesh-fill panel within an outer MS frame. Provides privacy without looking heavy. The perforated panel can be laser-cut with patterns. Popular in areas like C-Scheme and Civil Lines.
Contemporary cantilever sliding — single-leaf gate that slides along a counterweighted cantilever rail without ground tracks. Requires a precise weight-balance calculation. Motorisation is straightforward. Popular for independent houses with wider driveway openings.
Powder coating specification — the part most homeowners miss
Powder coating is a two-stage process: surface preparation and coating application.
Surface preparation is the most important and most commonly skipped step. Proper preparation involves:
- Sandblasting (or acid wash, which is less effective) to remove mill scale and surface rust
- Red oxide primer application — this is the actual rust barrier
- Surface inspection before top coat
Many local fabricators skip sandblasting. The gate looks identical on day one regardless. By year three, the difference is visible — rust blooming through the surface where the primer has failed.
Specify: "Sandblast or mechanical wire brush prep, red oxide prime coat, electrostatic powder coat top coat (RAL [colour code])."
Hardware specification
Gate post anchoring: The post and the concrete anchor are as important as the gate itself. An undersized anchor or a shallow-set post will allow the gate to tilt over time, stressing the hinges and closing mechanism.
Hinges: Weld-on hinge leafs for heavy gates (above 80kg per leaf) should be 10–12mm thickness with 20mm diameter pin. Specify three hinges per leaf for gates above 1.8m height.
Drop bolt: For double-leaf gates, a drop bolt to ground is essential to keep one leaf fixed. The bolt should go into a concrete socket, not into the ground surface.
Lock and latch: A barrel latch for the interior side and a lever-and-cylinder lock from outside is the standard configuration. Digital locks with motor actuation are available for retrofit.
What a gate should cost in Jaipur (2026)
| Gate type | Approximate cost (supply and install) |
|---|---|
| Single leaf MS flat bar, 4x7 ft, powder coat | Rs. 22,000–35,000 |
| Double leaf MS scroll, 10x6 ft, powder coat | Rs. 45,000–80,000 |
| Sliding cantilever, 12 ft wide, motor | Rs. 75,000–1,20,000 |
| SS 304 contemporary, 10 ft wide | Rs. 90,000–1,50,000 |
Note: Post and concrete anchor work is included in the above. Motorisation adds Rs. 18,000–35,000 depending on gate weight.
